Domain information

When will my domain expire?

This information is in your setup information that was supplied to you when your account with AB Media Services was opened.

Your registrar will send you notification of renewal and you should do this immediately.  If your domain name is allowed to expire, your website will become unavailable to the public.  It may also be that someone else will purchase that domain name and you would not then be able to use it.

I recommend that you lease your domain for at least 2 years (often a minimum lease period with many registrars) or even 5 years. Longer lease periods can help your website with SEO as search engines regard long leases as a "commitment" and therefore give you more credibility. (See SEO page)

When is my hosting account due for renewal?

Again, this information is contained in your setup information.

I will contact you in good time for your renewal. Please be aware that as with domain registration, your website may become unavailable to the public if your hosting fee isn't paid on time.

How To Access Your Webmail

You will need your username and password for your Webmail Account

To Access webmail, enter "http://webmail.yoursite.com/" into your browser address bar

You will be asked for a username and password.

Your username is "youraccount@yoursite.com" i.e. info@mydomain.co.uk

Your password  is either the password that was given to you on setup (assuming you haven't changed it) or, if it is an account that you have set up yourself, the password that you entered on setup. (Some browsers offer to remember the details for you.)

Choose the email programme that you want to use to read your webmail (Horde, Squirrel or Cube) and follow it's instructions.

When you have finished, please remember to log out.

If you are still experiencing problems, call me on 01959 571548

How To Access Your CPanel

You will need your username and password for Cpanel

To Access CPanel, enter "http://cpanel.yoursite.com/" into your browser address bar

You will be asked for a username and password.

Your username and password will be the ones that were given to you when your website was setup.
Please note that this username and password is NOT the same as those for your email accounts

Once you are logged in to Cpanel, you can set up email accounts, check user statistics, install web - based applications such as newsletters etc.

When you have finished, please remember to log out.

If you are still experiencing problems, call me on 01959 571548

Setting up a new email account

The address of your new account will also become your username for that account

First, access your CPanel. If you don't know how, see the CPanel link.

Once in CPanel, look down the icon list and find "Email Accounts". Click on the icon.

You can now set up a new account. (There is a video tutorial to guide you through the process).

Remember to keep a note of the password which you will need to be able to access the account in future.

If you make a mistake, either click the "HOME" icon at the top of the page, or continue and then, once you have finished, select the account from the list of email accounts and selelct "delete".

You can now repeat the process using the correct details.

Setting up Email Forwarding

Use forwarders to automatically forward any emails

A common use of forwarders is to "funnel" emails to your different accounts e.g. "sales, enquiries, support" etc., to a single "master" email account from which you collect all your emails. So, for example, you might forward your "sales, enquiries, support" accounts to your "info" account and then forward your "info" account to your hotmail or whichever is your main account.

First, access your CPanel. If you don't know how, see the CPanel link.

Once in CPanel, look down the icon list and find "Forwarders". Click.

You can now set up a new email forwarder. (There is a video tutorial to guide you through the process).

Select the email account you want to set the forwarder up for.

At the prompt, add the email address you want your emails to forwarded to.

Click "Create". That's it.

To delete a forwarder, select "Delete Forwarder" on the account you want to delete it from.

Setting up a newsletter

Maintain a database of customers and send them regular newsletters

First, access your CPanel. If you don't know how, see the CPanel link.

Once in CPanel, look down the icon list and find "Fantastico Deluxe". Click.

Look down the list of available applications and select PHPList

In the dialogue that opens at the top of the page, select "New Installation"

Follow the on-screen prompts to install PHPList, making a note of the HTTP address, your username and password, without which you will not be able to access the application.

Make a careful note of the ADMINISTRATION address.

When you enter the admin area, you will be prompted for the username and password you entered during installation.

PHPList is highly configurable, so please take time to familiarise yourself with it before using.

Please also note that the server is set to send no more that 500 emails per hour.

If you think you may exceed that limit, please contact me at support@abmediaserv.co.uk

Installing a Content Management System (CMS)

First, access your CPanel. If you don't know how, see the CPanel link.

Once in CPanel, look down the icon list and find "Fantastico Deluxe". Click.

Look down the list of available applications and select JOOMLA, DRUPAL, MAMBO, or any one of the other available CMS applications.

In the dialogue that opens at the top of the page, select "New Installation"

Follow the on-screen prompts making a note of the HTTP address, your username and password, without which you will not be able to access the application. Make a careful note of the ADMINISTRATION address. When you enter the admin area, you will be prompted for the username and password you entered during installation.

CMS applications are very powerful tools and can be all you need to power your website. Setting them up and configuring them however, is not for the faint hearted. If you are comfortable with PHP, MySQL and CSS, then you will find them very flexible. There are a lot of resources available on the web together with many templates that can be customised to get you going.

If you don't have the necessary expertise, or time, then I can set one up for you. Please visit my CMS Packages page for details.

Installing Online Shopping (E-Commerce)

First, access your CPanel. If you don't know how, see the CPanel link.

Once in CPanel, look down the icon list and find "Fantastico Deluxe". Click.

Look down the list of available applications and select CUBE CART, OS COMMERCE or ZEN CART, 3 of the most popular and well supported Open Source E-Commerce Solutions on the web.

It would pay to do some research into each of these applications before deciding on which would be right for you. They offer similar facilities but have different implementations and levels of stock control etc. You can certainly install one and, if you decide it's not right for you, uninstall it and try another. This is time consuming however and if you are interested in E-Commerce, I'm guessing that you will want to be up and running as soon as possible.

I can configure them for you. Please visit my E-Commerce page for details.
